The man accused of killing retired New Orleans Saints player Will Smith was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on a charge of second-degree murder.
Cardell Hayes allegedly shot Smith eight times on April 9 following an apparent road rage incident, according to ABC News. Seven of the shots hit Smith in the back.
The New Orleans Police Department said Hayes had previously admitted to the shooting.
Hayes was also indicted on a charge of attempted murder of Smith's wife, Racquel, who was at the scene of the incident, NOLA.com reported. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
Smith, a father of three, retired from professional football in 2012, three years after winning the Super Bowl.
