Fans of Donald Trump may have found the perfect person to solidify their Monday theme of “Make America Safe Again” in Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr.
In Clarke they had an African-American law enforcement officer who would bash the Black Lives Matter movement and celebrate the acquittal of the Baltimore police involved in Freddie Gray's death. He also happens to be a rare registered Democrat speaking at the Republican National Convention.
“What we witnessed in Ferguson, in Baltimore, and in Baton Rouge was a collapse of social order. So many of the actions of the Occupy movement and Black Lives Matter transcend peaceful protest, and violates the code of conduct we rely on,” Clarke said. “I call it anarchy.”
“American law enforcement officers understand that race is and has been a heated issue in our country,” he continued. “Most appreciate the vital need for thoroughness and transparency in pursuit of the greater good in their actions, and in their investigations.”
“These are truths that are self-evident to me, and which I practice, and they are the truths that Donald Trump understands and supports. Donald Trump is the steadfast leader our nation needs.”
Clarke has gotten a fair amount of attention in recent months, following a speech to the National Rifle Association calling gun control efforts “crap.” He hasn't been shy on Twitter either, posting comments criticizing Black Lives Matter and making fun of civil rights leader and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).
Clarke made his own press Monday with a TV appearance where he said he had predicted the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, police shootings. In a conversation with CNN's Don Lemon that got heated, Clarke also called the Black Lives Matter movement “hateful ideology” and accused President Barack Obama of lying about statistics about police aggression against black Americans.
For Trump delegates, Clarke is a guy who can say what they want to say about Black Lives Matter. His remarks drew more enthusiastic cheers from delegates than the previous two hours of Benghazi rehashing and anti-immigrant speeches interspersed with pat speeches from lackluster politicians.
Editor's note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist
