Fire At Black Church In South Carolina Is Latest In String Of Blazes At Places Of Worship

A fire broke out at a prominent black church in South Carolina on Tuesday night, the latest in a series of blazes at places of worship in the South serving the African-American community.

It is the seventh prominent African-American church in the South to have been burned down since a gunman killed nine people at the historic black church Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal in Charleston two weeks ago.

First reported around 9 p.m. ET, multiple fire crews responded to the fire that had broken out at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greeleyville, a town located about 65 miles north of Charleston. The church had previously been burned down by arsonists with ties to the KKK 20 years ago.

The fire was brought under control by 11 p.m., but not before causing severe damage. "The building collapsed," Fire fighter Jason Hardy of Clarendon County told HuffPost. "Only the outer shell is left. Just brick standing."

Mark Keel, chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, said federal agencies had been notified, the Post and Courier reported. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was on scene.

It is yet unclear as to what sparked the fire, but Keel pointed out that storms had recently rolled through the region, and lightning could have been the cause.

He expressed concern that the fire adds to a growing list of fires at black churches.

"Certainly, I think we all are concerned about those things," Keel told the Post and Courier. HuffPost has reached out to local officials for further detail.

Mount Zion AME had previously been burned down by the KKK in 1995, according to the Post and Courier, who was first to report the blaze on Tuesday night. Two former members of the KKK admitted to starting the fire in 1995. Last week, the Los Angeles Times featured the church in a story chronicling years of black churches being targeted. The church gained further notoriety when former President Bill Clinton attended a dedication of the new church in 1996.

There has been a rash of fires at predominantly black churches in the weeks following the June 17 massacre in Charleston. In the past two weeks, six of those fires occurred in Southern states, USA Today noted. Of these, three are confirmed as arson. Federal officials are looking into whether some of the cases may be hate crimes.

There is a long history of arson attacks on black churches in America, as The Atlantic recently detailed. The attacks are often racially motivated, "a highly visible attack on a core institution of the black community, often done at night, and often motivated by hate," writer Emma Green wrote.

Speaking last week on the shooting at Emanuel AME Church, President Barack Obama said, "The fact that this took place in a black church obviously also raises questions about a dark part of our history. This is not the first time that black churches have been attacked."

The series of church fires began just days after the the Charleston shooting, invigorating a conversation on the issue of deep-seated racism in America. Lawmakers and civil rights leaders have sparked a national movement calling for the removal of the Confederate flag over its ties to slavery. Pictures posted on online of Dylann Roof, the suspected shooter in the Charleston killings, show him with the flag and at Confederate sites.

Misty Copeland On Stepping Out From Behind The Other Swans

misty copeland

Misty Copeland, American Ballet Theatre's first African-American female principal dancer in the company’s 75-year history, spoke about her career on Tuesday at Lincoln Center. Amid the overwhelming response to her historic appointment, she was adamant that she isn't an "overnight sensation."

Having struggled with self-doubt as a young ballerina, she strives to encourage aspiring dancers to envision a brighter future. "You have to have believe in yourself. Before anyone else, you really have to believe that you're good enough, you're worthy and know that it's not easy," Copeland said. "You have to put in the work, but you also have to allow yourself to dream."

Copeland, 32, joined ABT as a member of the corps de ballet in 2001, and was later appointed a soloist in 2007. The show-stopping ballerina most recently starred as Odette/Odile in "Swan Lake" at the Met.

"I am so honored, so extremely honored to be a principal dancer," she said, "and so proud of my fellow dancers who were also promoted today: Stella Abrera, who's been with the company longer than I have, who represents what ABT stands for -- the hard work and the sacrifice. Cassie Trenary was promoted to soloist, and Skylar Brandt, Arron Scott and Thomas Forster. It's an exciting day for all of us."

Copeland recalled a particularly significant moment of trepidation when she first arrived in the corps de ballet at ABT. "When I looked around and saw that I was the only one in a company of 80 dancers," she said, referring to the fact that she was the only black dancer in the company. "I had to remind myself that ABT was my dream company and that I would be giving up had I left."

She doesn't shy away from talking about the lack of diversity in international ballet companies. And she embraces her position at the forefront of change.

"I think I would have had a completely different path had there been more [African-American dancers] before me. Maybe I wouldn't have worked as hard. I don't know," Copeland said. "I didn't know that there would a future for an African-American woman to make it to this level. At the same time, it made me so hungry to push through, to carry the next generation. It's not me up here, it's everyone that came before me that got me to this position, and all the little girls that can see themselves through me."

Copeland's peers, instructors and critics often remind her that the success she's found is well-deserved. Though, she adds, she still faces intense scrutiny.

"I go into ballet class every morning. I work my butt off eight hours a day because I know that I have to deliver when I get on stage," she said. "I have to go out there every night and perform live and prove myself, maybe more so than other dancers, because people are assuming, 'Why is she getting this attention, is it really based on her dancing?'"

With the celebrated promotion, Copeland anticipates some changes in her life. "I think that the work load will now be a little bit less," she said. "It will allow me to focus on these major roles. At the same time, every single time you go on stage you're being looked at, so you can't hide behind the other swans anymore."

Asked about the next step, the the ballet star broke down in tears as she contemplated a dream fulfilled. "It just sounds so surreal to hear those words. No, this is it. My dream had been ABT since I was 13. To be a principal dancer is reaching those heights, and now I feel like I can breathe. But [principal dancer] David Hallberg told me this morning, 'The hard work is just now starting.' And I love a challenge."

Hawaii Governor Approves Traditional Hawaiian Burial Practices

HONOLULU (AP) -- The governor of Hawaii has signed a bill ensuring Native Hawaiians can practice an ancient tradition in which a corpse is cleansed by fire and the bones are held as sacred in a cloth before being buried.

Gov. David Ige signed the bill Tuesday amid concerns by crematories that the rarely used practice might be illegal.

Some supporters promoted the move as environmentally friendly because bones could be buried in a basket and take up less space than a modern casket on the small island.

Mahealani Cypher, an advocate of the bill, says Hawaiians will probably utilize crematories instead of the outdoor ovens people used in ancient times.

The funeral industry is trying to figure out how to accommodate the custom.

R&B Singer Kem Discusses His Battle Overcoming Addiction, Commemorates 25 Years Of Sobriety

Singer Kem (nee Kim Owens) has landed on the top of music charts and earned three Grammy Award-nominations since the release of his debut album “Kemistry” in 2003.

However, prior to amassing music success, the Motown recording artist found himself battling drug addiction -- which drove him to multiple stints in jail, hospitals and homelessness in Detroit. In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Kem describes feeling emotionally and spiritually “bankrupt” -- having damaged relationships with family and friends and ultimately having an epiphany to turn his life around seek help in 1990.

“My addiction brought me to my knees. So it was like, ‘Look, either you’re going to do this or you’re going to die out here in the streets,’” Kem recalled. “I could no longer continue living the way I was living, and I didn’t know how to stop. And it was at that point when we [as addicts] give up on our own plan and our own ideas on how to solve our dilemmas -- as far as recovery is concerned -- we have to get out of the way.”

“The principles of my recovery are principles that permeate through every area of my life,” he continued. “You hear it in the music, they run my business. So I’m not just clean and sober from drugs and alcohol, my recovery is the foundation for everything in my life right now.”

In addition to attributing God as his biggest inspiration to remaining sober, Kem said that surrounding himself with spiritually minded people and helping others overcome their personal obstacles with addiction are some of the ways he maintains sobriety.

The Detroit native has been an active participant in the Detroit community through his non-profit organization, Mack & Third, Inc. -- which raises funds and resources to support the city's homeless. He has also spoken out in support of supervised treatment for nonviolent drug addicts.

As the singer celebrates 25 years of sobriety on July 23 and prepares to perform at this year's annual Essence Festival in New Orleans on July 3, he encourages others seeking recovery to do the necessary work to overcome addiction.

“It ain’t no mystery to it. You can do it, you just have to be brought to a place where you’re willing to do that,” he said. “The trouble is for most of us in recovery, recovery is not something that you automatically choose. We have to hit the bottom. We have to be brought to our knees before we make a decision.”

“I can’t tell you about it, unless they’ve been brought to a place where they’re able and willing to receive help, and that’s usually when we’re at our worst. But it is available to everybody who’s willing to work for it.”

Geeking Out With Misty Copeland's First Ballet Teacher On The Bigness Of Today

misty copeland
"I realized that I could put her body into positions and she could hold them and all of the positions were beautiful."

Tuesday morning, the American Ballet Theatre stopped delaying the inevitable and finally appointed Misty Copeland a principal ballerina. The first black principal in ABT’s 75-year history, Copeland is also a bonafide cultural icon -- a Time cover star with more than a half a million followers on Instagram. As Copeland’s famously varied fans could tell you, the 32-year-old is a true anomaly: neither white nor lanky, but blessed with a physically extraordinary body deemed by short-sighted gatekeepers early in her career as unfit for ballet.

The challenges started early for Copeland. Much of her childhood played out in a two-room motel suite with five siblings and a single mom in San Pedro, California. She also came dauntingly late to ballet: she was 13, an age when most future students have been training half their lives, when a ballet teacher coaxed the shy, watchful girl down from the bleachers at the San Pedro YMCA to join a class unfolding in the gym. That teacher was Cindy Bradley, a soft-spoken former company dancer who would go on to play an intimate and complex role in Copeland’s life, even raising the dancer in her home for a time amidst an ugly custody battle.

We rang Bradley at her studio, where she continues to teach ballet. In between conversations with students, she told us what it feels like when a teacher’s wildest dreams come true.

Here is a blast from the past - Capezio ad when Misty was a spokesperson circa 2002: ENJOY!

Posted by Misty Copeland on Thursday, August 26, 2010

What has today been like?
The phone keeps ringing! It’s just incredible.

What was it that led you to persuade Misty to join your class that day, nearly two decades ago?
The fact that she was watching so intently and that she seemed very shy. I knew she had to be asked. She wouldn’t come down without being asked. She was 13, and she was just tiny.

Did you see something in her immediately?
When she came down, she took the bar and we started class and I realized that I could put her body into positions and she could hold them and all of the positions were beautiful. I knew immediately that she was extremely gifted.

Was it her build, or some innate ability?
It was the lines. I would take her leg and pull it out, extend it, and then take her foot and point it and say, "Ok, hold that." She was able to make beautiful lines from the beginning. She just had all the makings of a beautiful dancer.

misty copeland
Where dancers typically master the art of standing on pointe over the course of several years, Copeland -- seen here at age 14 -- took just three months, according to Bradley.

And no training.
She was on her drill team at middle school, but that was it.

You’ve said before that you were struck with a vision of a possible future for the little girl in front of you. Does today’s news come close to what you saw in your mind on that basketball court?
I think at the time, I was seeing her potential of what she could do as a dancer. I also knew that she could possibly be in a position of being a role model. But all of this took the incredible hard work -- continuous hard work -- by Misty. I knew she was going to do great dancing, but this is just almost too impossible to even dream of.

Do you see her young self when you watch her dance today?
Absolutely. We actually just got back from New York City where we saw her do "Swan Lake." When I look into her eyes, she is still that sweet girl. That heart that we fell in love with is still there, that I think the world has fallen in love with. They’ve fallen in love with Misty, not just her dancing.

“I will forever fight, performing like it’s my last show.” #lifeinmotion

Shay Mitchell's Dream 'Pretty Little Liars' Ending Is Perfect

Shay Mitchell stars in one of television's hottest shows, regularly updates her YouTube channel and has a book (that she co-wrote with her bestie) coming out. Somewhere in between, she posed for the cover of Seventeen's latest issue.

The "Pretty Little Liars" actress sports a fresh face and perfect mani on the magazine's August cover and opens up in her interview about avoiding relationship drama and growing up a "hippie child." She addressed the future of "Pretty Little Liars" (of course) and admitted she's pretty curious about how the show will end. In the meantime, she offered her own ideal ending. (Hint: It's kind of perfect.)

Seventeen’s August issue hits stands on July 7. Scroll down to see Shay's cover and head over to Seventeen.com for more.

On her dream "Pretty Little Liars" ending: "In my fantasy world, the girls are all happy running around in a flower field with no cell phones -- although I don’t think that’s really going to happen. I’m very curious myself!"

On why she loves being naked around the house: "I was a hippie child. I find the human body so beautiful. But it’s not like I’m running naked down the street! I’m in my own house, and I always have a bathrobe really close to me because if there were an earthquake, I’d have to be able to run out with something."

On relationship drama: "I have friends who like that drama. I’m not one of those people. If you’re a suitable, positive partner, then great, I’d love to add you to my life. But I don’t need anybody to feel complete. I don’t need to be with somebody just to not be alone."

It Really Can Happen in Detroit - But Not Without You

Much like stubborn weeds growing between breaks in the sidewalk, Detroiters simply will not let their city fall away into disrepair or allow buildings to stay abandoned.

Case in point is the former Larned Elementary School in Northwest Detroit in a devastated neighborhood. Boarded up for years since its closure in 2002, it was vacant until 2009. At that time the doors were opened, sun shined through the windows, and the new owners Pastor Ray and Toni Anderson renamed it "The House of Help Community Center."

It's about as modest as it gets - a weekly food distribution program feeding over 150 families, after-school mentoring and summer camp, church services and potluck dinners and an assistance program to help the low-income with utility bills and emergency relief.

Pastor Anderson describes the journey. "For the last six years, we've been an anchor in northwest Detroit, but have a vision to do so much more. We've been in discussion with the city to purchase the abandoned school we operate out of...to revitalize the community."

"We began to partner with the Detroit Workers and Builders (DW&B), an offshoot of the Detroit Water Brigade which had been helping many of our community members get emergency aid after water cutoffs and financial assistance with their water bills. Together, we made a commitment to raise $100,000 to make a dream a reality."

According to spokesperson Justin Wedes, one of the founders of the DW&B, monies raised will be used to formally purchase and then to renovate the building to create a full-fledged community center and empowerment zone for the surrounding neighborhoods.

$42,500 and We'll Finally Own the Building

Along with the problems that go along with ownership, of course. Although the city of Detroit is delighted to see urban transformation of this sort, it is also a landlord. It will watch carefully as an additional $30,000 is raised to keep the lights on and water running to see if they will have to - as they have done in the past - turn off the power leaving the occupants to resort to flashlights and candles.

"When the utility company cut the lights for the Center for nonpayment," Pastor Anderson describes, "we held after-school tutoring programs by flashlight and prayed for help. In the past year we have seen a spike in the number of people seeing our help and - at the same time - our charitable support has declined with the economy. So, we do more with less."

The City of Detroit has a stake in keeping hopes alive at this fledgling center, as their plans also call for an additional - ready for this? - $20,000 to be raised to fund a job training and employment operation. In a city with over 100,000 unemployed (and 16,000 homeless), any program promising to get people back on their feet deserves embracing.

Let's Not Forget the Additional $27,500 for Staffing

Yes, you have to have an executive team - even if part-time - to oversee this magic. And, it will take some magic to raise the $100,000, invest in professional development, and chart the path for long-term sustainability.

"We can do this," Wedes asserts, "and if we raise more than $100,000 we will immediate begin gut renovating the building, employing and training local talent to do the work through the Detroit Workers and Builders program."

He also concedes that this will be a tough row to hoe.

In an Indiegogo campaign for the $100,000 - which will end in early July - only $5,301 has been raised to date. Nonplussed, the community intends to keep reaching out for people to show the same heart they have, but with resources greater than they possess.

"We need Detroiters, former Detroiters, and concerned citizens across the U.S. are to visit the fundraising site and give what they can."

Pastor Anderson adds, "We are full of hope for the future of the Motor City, but without the backing of our whole country (and international support, too!), we won't be able to put Detroit back to work.

We are working to reverse decades of divestment and abandonment by revitalizing this important community anchor to once again serve current and future generations of Detroiters."

Yes, much like stubborn weeds growing between breaks in the sidewalk, this group of Detroiters simply will not let their city's peoples and properties remain abandoned. But, no matter how stubborn, even weeds need nourishment.

With due respect to the Pastor, you can only do more ... with more.

Is Demi Lovato's New Song About A Fling With A Girl?

Sapphic relationships are apparently “Cool for the Summer.”

Demi Lovato’s highly anticipated new single, “Cool for the Summer,” made its way online this morning and it’s every bit the banger fans were hoping for.

The single, which can be heard in full here, will officially premiere tomorrow on iHeartRadio.

instagram.com

The song — packed with dark, sexy synths and big, infectious hooks — marks a new sound for the singer, but it’s the sapphic overtones that are the real surprise.

A quick peek at the lyrics would seem to confirm that the song is about a same-sex summer fling, and the video trailer Lovato shared on Instagram over the weekend is similarly suggestive.

Tell me what you want
What you like
It's okay
I'mma little curious too
Tell me if it's wrong
If it's right
I don't care
I can keep a secret could, you?

Got my mind on your body
And your body on my mind
Got a taste for the cherry
I just need to take a bite
Don't tell your mother
Kiss one another
Die for each other
We're cool for the summer
(Ha)

Ooh, Ooh
Take me down into your paradise
Don't be scared cause I'm your body type
Just something that we wanna try
Cause you and I
We're cool for the summer

Tell me if I won
If I did
What's my prize?
I just wanna play with you, too
Even if they judge
Fuck it all
Do the time
I just wanna have some fun with you

Got my mind on your body
And your body on my mind
Got a taste for the cherry
I just need to take a bite
Don't tell your mother
Kiss one another
Die for each other
We're cool for the summer

Video: Kendrick Lamar – ‘Alright’

King Kendrick continues his reign. After opening the BET Awards with “Alright,” the Compton kingpin debuts the black-and-white video for the fan favorite track off his chart-topping album To Pimp a Butterfly. In the epic seven-minute clip, directed by Colin Tilley and The Little Homies, Kendrick stands up against apartheid and discrimination. He rides out with his TDE crew including ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock while debuting some new bars.

The video then switches gears, with Kendrick in a car doing donuts through a parking lot in San Francisco while dancers perform on top of a cop car.

Kendrick also does his own stunts—gliding through the air, hanging upside down, and perched on a street light high above L.A. LIVE.

Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner Getting Divorced

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are ending their 10 year marriage ... TMZ has learned. We're told the couple, whose anniversary was yesterday, will file for divorce. Although they will file for divorce, it won't be done immediately. They are working…

Ben Affleck And Jennifer Garner Split After 10 Years Of Marriage

Our worst nightmare has come true.

Hollywood golden couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have called it quits after 10 years of marriage, TMZ reports. The couple confirmed their split in a statement:

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

Rumors first started swirling about the state of their relationship earlier this month, with an insider telling Us Weekly, "The marriage is in trouble." Reportedly, Affleck's "workaholic" mentality didn't sit well with Garner, who is usually home with the pair's three children, Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3.

Garner recently opened up to Yahoo! Parenting about balancing her marriage and parenthood, explaining, "You just go on a ride together because you don’t know who you’re going to be when you first have a baby and you don’t know who [your partner] is going to be. You have to just hang in there while you figure it out -- and have a lot of patience for each other."

Affleck and Garner tied the knot on June 29, 2005 in a private ceremony in Turks and Caicos. This was the first marriage for the "Batman" star, while Garner was previously married to actor Scott Foley.

Hearts everywhere are breaking.

High School Player Cody Riley Shatters Backboard On Dunk Attempt

Game over.

No, really.

High school player Cody Riley swooped in for a slam dunk that shattered the backboard and sent the rim crashing to the court.

dunk

And that was the end of that summer league game June 18 at Maranatha High School in Pasadena, California, because folks had to clean up the mess, Bleacher Report noted.

Riley may have missed the dunk but gained plenty of media attention from the moment.

He is scheduled to graduate from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California, in 2017 and reportedly has several universities interested in him.

They better have tough baskets.

Here's the aftermath. It seems Sierra Canyon was trailing Chino Hills by quite a bit at the time of the destructive jam.

10 Things I Learned about Nina Simone

I screened What Happened, Ninan Simone? on Netflix. The title comes from a Maya Angelou quote:
Miss Simone, you are idolized, even loved, by millions now. But what happpened, Miss Simone?
Here are 10 things I learned:

1. She was born Eunice Waymon.

2. She changed her name so her mother wouldn't know she was playing non-church music aka "the devil's music" aka jazz.

3. She wanted to be the first black classical pianist to play Carnegie Hall.

4. She wrote Mississippi Goddam after the deaths of Medgar Evans and the girls in the church in Birmingham and performed it during the march to Selma in 1965.

Alabama's got me so upset, Tennesee's made me lost my rest, and everybody knows about Mississippi goddam

5. She told the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King she was not non-violent.

6. Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz were next door neighbors and two of their children appear in the documentary.

7. She was physically abused by her second husband and in turn physically abused her daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, who was the executive producer of the film.

8. She was friends with Lorraine Hansberry.

9. She performed on the tv show Playboy's Penthouse and was introduced by Hugh Hefner.

10. She was dignosed both as bipolar and manic depressive.

Peace, love, compassion, and blessings.

A 'Back To The Future' Remake Won't Happen While Robert Zemeckis Is Alive

In the era where (nearly) everything in Hollywood is a remake, there's the fear another beloved classic will be destroyed by the dreaded reboot. But thankfully, not every filmmaker is behind the trend.

When The Telegraph asked Robert Zemeckis if he wold ever allow a "Back to the Future" remake to happen, the filmmaker's response was pretty perfect. "Oh, God no,” he said. “That can’t happen until both Bob [Gale] and I are dead," Zemeckis said of himself and trilogy co-writer Gale. Though the director knows that a remake could happen once he is dead, he hopes there's a way his estate can prevent it from happening in the future. (If only Zemeckis had an actual DeLorean.)

“I mean, to me, that’s outrageous," Zemeckis told The Telegraph. The filmmaker compared it to the likes of remaking "Citizen Kane," adding, "What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?” We couldn't agree more.

Gale echoed this sentiment when he told Yahoo last year that a fourth installment of the film series wouldn't be happening. “Let’s face it, we’ve seen a lot of sequels that are made years and years later and I don’t think I can name one that’s any good, that lives up to the originals," Gale told Yahoo. "I don’t think you can recapture it.”

Instead, Gale and Zemeckis are working on a "Back to the Future" musical. The two originally planned to open the musical on London’s West End in 2015 to celebrate the film's upcoming 30th anniversary, but last October, Gale announced it wasn't quite ready. "We’re not going to put it out there until we absolutely love it ourselves," he told Yahoo.

For more, head to The Telegraph.

Jeremy Renner Responds To Gay Rumors

Jeremy Renner doesn't care if you think he's gay.

As has been the case with many celebrities, Renner's sexuality has been a source of public interest. Back in 2012, the "Avengers" star gave a candid cover-story interview to The Hollywood Reporter and quashed speculation about his sexual orientation.

“I want my personal life to be personal," he said at the time. "How about I go peek in your window, take what underwear you wore last night, whose husband you were f**king, and shove that in the megaphone throughout your neighborhood? How does that feel?”

Fast forward three years and Renner is addressing those same gay rumors head-on in an interview with Playboy magazine.

[A]s a general rule I don’t respond to questions about my personal life. I’m not going to try to prove what I am or am not. It’s silly, right? When you [G]oogle yourself and the first thing that comes up is “Jeremy Renner gay,” it’s like, “Oh, now you’ve arrived. You’re now a giant movie star.” So I just had a big laugh about it. I don’t care, ultimately, if that’s what people want to think, read and care about. F**king say whatever the hell you want about me. Look at where we’re at socially -- leaps and bounds ahead of where we started. That’s an amazing thing. To suggest that it’s negative, that being gay is a terrible thing, a perversion or whatever -- I just don’t get it. Don’t you wish we were in a world where we’re not shaming, judging and boxing people in?

The 44-year-old actor is currently in the process of getting divorced. His ex, Sonni Pacheco, made the filing back in December after 10 months of marriage. The two share custody of their 2-year-old daughter, Ava.

21 Things That Are Complete Smartasses

Smartasses. They're everywhere. Usually where you'd rather they weren't. Because they know you don't want them there. Which is why they're smartasses.

Still, you can't deny the fun that general smartassery brings into our daily lives. If you can allow yourself to laugh a bit, you'll usually see that the smartasses of the world are providing a very worthwhile service to all of us: Entertainment at the expense of (hopefully) someone else.

As if we didn't have enough human smartasses, here are a bunch of everyday things being smartasses too. And do you know why? Because they can be.

Emilia Clarke Talking Like A Valley Girl Is More Shocking Than 'Game Of Thrones'

If you thought the "Game of Thrones" finale was shocking, just get ready because this is, like, a whole situation.

Actress Emilia Clarke pretty much sounds like her character from "Game of Thrones" in real life, but in an instant on Monday she went from Khaleesi to Cali from the Valley. While stopping by to promote "Terminator Genisys," Clarke told Jimmy Kimmel about a time she broke out her Valley girl accent at a Home Depot to avoid being recognized while shopping for an air conditioner -- which makes sense, because Khaleesi is supposed to like the heat. The actress demonstrated the accent, which she credits to her love of the movie "Clueless," and everyone totally had a cow fer sher.

If the people of Westeros don't give her the Iron Throne now, then they're just a bunch of snobs and a half.
