Look what The Weeknd's done. The Canadian crooner transforms into a “Starboy” in the dark video for the Daft Punk-assisted lead single and title track off his upcoming album.
The brooding visual, directed by Grant Singer (“Can't Feel My Face,” “The Hills”), starts with a masked man killing Abel, his trademarks locks still intact. When the masked man reveals himself, we see his “Starboy” take over, decked out in leather, a blinged-out cross, and freshly-cut hair.
Symbolism is all over. While “Starboy” sings about his money, women, and cars, for instance, he demolishes his house, smashing his trophies and platinum plaques with a large red neon cross. Eventually, he even burns the place down after doing the robot dance.
The dark imagery continues when “Starboy” drives off into the night and as the small black cat in the passenger seat turns into a panther.
The Weeknd will perform his new single and debut another new song live on the season premiere of “SNL” this weekend. It all leads up to the Nov. 25 release of his album Starboy.
Witness The Weeknd's transformation in the video below.
