Mabel Ball has literally waited her entire life to watch her beloved baseball team win the World Series. The 108-year-old was born two months before the Chicago Cubs became the 1908 champions.
“You keep hoping that they'll keep on doing well and getting to the top,” she told ABC7 News from Northbrook, Illinois, where she now lives in a retirement community.
She didn't attend a game at Chicago's Wrigley Field until she was 90.
“I was busy,” she told the Chicago Tribune. She worked on her family's dairy farm north of the city, so she would listen on the radio.
“Mom had the games on,” her son, Richard Ball, confirmed. Her favorite player, he said, is probably Ernie Banks, an African-American hall-of-famer who played for the Cubs from 1953 to 1971.
“Go, Cubs, go!” she exclaimed. “I'm going to root for you more than ever.”
Game 3 of the World Series will take place Friday night. The Cubs are currently tied 1-1 with the Cleveland Indians.
