Zendaya Scores A Role In Upcoming 'Spider-Man' Reboot

Zendaya is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Huffington Post can confirm the 19-year-old has been cast in the upcoming Sony/Marvel "Spider-Man" reboot alongside Tom Holland, who will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Details surrounding her exact role, however, are sparse.

Deadline reports that the Disney channel star has been cast as a character named Michelle. At this point, it's uncertain whether she'll be a romantic interest for Peter -- as that role is generally reserved for either Mary Jane Watson or Gwen Stacy -- but anything can happen.

We think Zendaya's character could potentially be Michele Gonzales, younger sister of Officer Vin Gonzales, who was once Peter's roommate; the two have a complicated (to say the least) relationship in the comic books.

At one point, The Chameleon inhabits Peter's body and proceeds to sleep with Michele, who has no idea about the switch. She then believes her and Peter are boyfriend and girlfriend, until Peter reveals the truth. Naturally, she doesn't believe him and plenty of drama ensues.

Whether or not Zendaya will take on the role of Michele Gonzales or someone completely new, we can't say. But we'll admit it would be pretty great to see a new character enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially one who brings a little diversity to this franchise.

"Spider-Man" will be directed by Jon Watts ("Cop Car") and is expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2017.
