Tales From a Camp For Extraordinary Kids

camp

This article is part of an on-going original series written by Caitlyn Jenner for WhoSay called "The Real Me," which explores issues and people in the LGBT community.

Hi friends!

Not too long ago I had the honor of visiting a very special place called Camp Aranu'tiq. On the surface, it looks like any other children's summer camp -- kids ages 8-15 are running around doing sports, swimming, and lots of other fun activities. However, it's a retreat entirely for transgender children, teens, and their families. Pretty neat stuff.

My friends and I spent time talking with the campers and I probably learned more from them than they did from me. I was so impressed by them -- these young people have it together. Despite the tremendous challenge of dealing with their gender identities, they have incredible aspirations and are excited about life.

ad

Camp Aranu'tiq has only been around for six years and it's growing quickly. Imagine a safe and fun place where these kids can be surrounded by others like them for the first time in their lives. Such an remarkable experience. With that, I want to turn it over to the mastermind behind Camp Aranu'tiq, Nick Teich, who will give you an even deeper look at this groundbreaking resource for young transgender children and their families.

Take it away, Nick!

-----------------

Let me start by saying how wonderful it was to meet Caitlyn and for her to meet our campers. They need role models and people in the public eye to educate everyone out there that being transgender is okay. We want them to know that you can be a successful person and be transgender, too.

adfads

As a kid, I went to camp and had a phenomenal experience. When I got older, I started volunteering at a different camp, which didn't invite me back as a counselor once they learned I was transitioning. The director said, "For the good of the kids, don't come back." It was a surprising and heartbreaking moment for me.

I loved camp and learned the ins and outs of being an administrator. I talked to many parents who said their kids could not attend sleepaway camp because they were trans and they weren't being welcomed. At that point, I knew I had to start Camp Aranu'tiq.

The camp opened six years ago as a volunteer operation with 40 kids and it has grown exponentially... this year we will serve more than 400 people in the course of one season! We're entirely non-profit, and -- thanks to donations -- we're able to provide financial aid to pretty much whoever needs it.

asdf

Instead of focusing on being therapeutic, we intentionally keep the activities to what you'd find at any other kids' summer camp. We have sports, drama, music, canoeing, swimming... things like that. We feel like the kids are forced to defend their genders and life courses all the time in the outside world, so we want them to be able to come to camp and feel normal.

adfadsadfs

As you can imagine, coming to camp is a life changing experience for many of our campers. There's one story I wanted to share with you about a young trans girl who had a hard time adjusting and her parents weren't sure how she'd fare at camp. She was so unhappy with her body (which was male) that she resisted going to the bathroom and taking showers, which led to medical problems. When she got back from camp, her parents and doctors couldn't believe the difference in her. She felt better about herself because she had been around others like her, who understood her. We have a lot of stories like that.

sdf

Camp Aranu'tiq has been an incredible experience. I think back to when I was not allowed at that volunteer camp because I was trans. I never could have imagined that horrible experience would have turned into such an opportunity to help other kids. To all of you reading, if you have an issue or something discriminatory that happens to you, it's almost always possible to turn it around into something positive. Camp Aranu'tiq is living proof of this.

Interview with Prince: Purple One Talks the Tidal Wave

2015-08-31-1441034457-9137078-L_1_articlesmall_52578.jpg

By Miles Marshall Lewis

Never turn down an invitation to Paisley Park Studios. Days after receiving an invite to speak with 25-year-old producer Joshua Welton about HitNRun--next month's Prince album, streaming exclusively on Jay Z's Tidal service starting September 7--I made my first speedy pilgrimage to Minneapolis. Last year, Prince unveiled the 3rdeyegirl power trio (guitarist Donna Grantis, bassist Ida Kristine Nielsen and drummer Hannah Welton), his first new band since the New Power Generation debuted in 1990. PlectrumElectrum by Prince & 3rdeyegirl dropped alongside Prince's Welton-coproduced Art Official Age last September. Both albums marked Prince's most exciting work since his 1996 triple album, Emancipation.

"So when he comes in here, you can just hide that phone," Welton advised with a laugh. After a run-through of HitNRun (a particularly funky, powerful album with guest appearances by Rita Ora and Judith Hill) and a quick interview, Prince came down to Studio B for a few surprise words about Tidal, music streaming and the record industry. He wore purple and gold like the Minnesota Vikings, MPLS emblazoned across his zip-down jacket. His Afro was back to its 1979 For You fullness. He was laid-back, full of conversation and, as usual, averse to being officially recorded for this exclusive EBONY.com interview.

EBONY: What made you decide to move your catalog to Tidal and away from the other streaming services, and why is HitNRun about to be exclusively available on Tidal?

Prince: Tidal is a new company, it's brand new. They're just getting their footing, and I think when there's a company like that, or the OWN network--situations where we finally get into a position to run things--we all should help. It's been a lot of fun.

We've changed the format of how our music appears. Where it would normally say "RELATED" and have a bunch of random stuff pop up--I love D'Angelo but he's just getting started, he came way after--what we did is we changed that to INFLUENCES. Then all these black and white pictures come up and you can go back and look at all the people who influenced me. Then in each one of those situations, Tidal allowed us to go and work on those pages.

That's the problem with these formats is that there's a lot of laziness out there. They have to do so much, so a lot of times it's just a program. It's an algorithm. I didn't want to be a part of that.

EBONY: What is your perfect model of the music industry? You've been vocal about the changes it needs to make for decades now.

Prince: Technology is getting all of humanity to the point where we're gonna be able to dial up our own experience here. So I may have a version of it, and Jay Z may have a version of it, and Kendrick Lamar may have a version of it. There isn't gonna be one size fits all. You could see that with hip-hop, really. They didn't say "courtesy of," they just jumped on people's records when they felt like it. You're talking about grown men asking another grown man permission to sing. So yeah, there is no perfect.

Different situations call for a different approach, a different set up. The Musicology Tour for example, when we bundled the record with the tour, it was perfect for that time.

EBONY: We've got this rare audience with you. What would you most like to express to the EBONY readership at the moment?

Prince: I've always made it a point when I've spoken with EBONY to encourage ownership. Because we can look at situations, with Tidal for example. Apple, Pandora, Rhapsody, Deezer, when you give them your record, you might get paid six months later. Beyoncé, her last album came out, $18 million went into the kitty the very next day. She didn't get that money. She got paid on a royalty scale, just like all the other artists. That's what I'm talking about.

LeBron James, his deal is a completely designer deal, completely different than any other basketball player. So that's what we need for the future. To stay afloat, it's gonna need the Kanye Wests and the Kendricks and people like that who can make product and get people excited about stuff. And they're going to dictate what the deal is gonna look like. And that's what's fun about the times now.

Young Thug Gives Bizarre Interview to Tim Westwood

Young Thug caught up with Tim Westwood after a recent show in London, and the interview is as wild as you’d expect. While backstage in his dressing room, Thugger—wearing hotel slippers and a diamond-studded Apple Watch—discusses his new music, drugs, and swag.

“I never thought you’d make it over here,” gushes Westwood, enthusiastic as ever. “I thought you had too many cases.”

Westwood questions him about his upcoming projects. “Slime Season 1, crazy,” Thug responds, referring his forthcoming project with London On Da Track. “Slime Season 2, crazy. Hy!£UN35 the album, crazy. Slime Season 3.”

When Westwood tells Thug that he’s “moving pretty crazy right now,” Thug responds, “Lotta drugs.”

Things get “lit,” in Westwood’s words, when a blunt is sparked. Westwood prods Thug to talk about his label situation, saying that there have been a lot of false starts. “Did you hear that, bitch?” says Thug into the camera, addressing Lyor Cohen of 300 Entertainment, his label.

“Swag drippin’,” remarks Thug cryptically, when Westwood asks about his “swag levels.”

Thugger will kick off his U.S. tour next month and release his debut album Hy!£UN35 this fall.

United Flounder in Wales, Manchester United Week 4 Recap

Manchester United faltered this weekend against Swansea City, surrendering their first two goals of the season. United seized the lead in the second half at Liberty Stadium, but failed to maintain it and even worse, failed to strike back in order to draw the match. Wayne Rooney and Sergio Romero were United's worst performers as both played the scapegoat in each Swansea goal.

Louis Van Gaal made three changes to the side that started against Club Brugge during the midweek. Romero started in goal. Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw started in the back four. Bastian Schweinsteiger replaced Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin reprised his role in central defensive midfield. Memphis started in his accustomed role at wide left. Ander Herrera was deployed in the No. 10 role, replacing the injured Adnan Januzaj, and Juan Mata played wide right. Wayne Rooney started as the lone striker, hoping to break his Barclays Premier League scoreless streak.

United maintained the majority of possession throughout the game, but managed few scoring chances until the second half. Although their possession was undeniable, there was little bite going forward to their passing and the tempo failed to resemble Ferguson's glory days.

Swansea on the other hand managed to look threatening despite seeing just 38 percent of the ball throughout the first half. The danger man was Swansea forward Bafetimbi Gomis, who performed the role of target man exceptionally well. He held up play from the front, reconnecting with his midfield and allowing their brief stints of possession to lead to chances going forward. On three separate occasions his influence nearly led to a goal in the first half. First, he was played a through ball through the air that he elected to shoot on goal. His shot was wild, however, and led to an innocent goal kick. On the second occasion, he worked a free kick well, rolling a through pass to Gylfi Siggurdson. Siggurdson's shot went begging wide and most would have pegged him for slotting home the chance comfortably. His third and final chance, before the half ended, struck the post as he dribbled the United defense expertly and flicked an outside of the boot shot past Romero.

The second half start from United was more positive and in the 48th minute, United would find their breakthrough. Luke Shaw dribbled from midfield and received a fortunate forward bounce when tackled in his dribble. He was allowed to play in a cross towards Wayne Rooney, who was unable to control it, but the ball managed to evade Swansea's defenders as well finding Mata at the far post. He finished the move with his right foot to give United the lead and score his 50th career goal in English football.

Fast forward to the 61st minute, where Rooney's involvement in the attack turned him to the ultimate culprit, as he turned the ball over needlessly. Swansea swiftly counterattacked and Andre Ayew latched onto a cross to head the ball past Romero for the equalizing goal. Five minutes later, Ayew would play the role of playmaker with a brilliant outside of the foot through pass to Gomis running into the box behind the United defense. Romero attempted to come off his line and challenge the cross, but his anticipation was slow and the movement left him in no man's land off his post. Gomis' shot a feathered attempt on goal managed to beat the Argentine goalie right near his left foot due to the lack of time for a reaction because of his positioning. United truly paid for De Gea's absence in that moment, as the save could have been made from a better positioned or a more capable, agile goalkeeper.

Wayne Rooney's frustrating performance would not end without a final brilliant opportunity to notch United level. After controlling an air pass wonderfully, he beat two Swansea defenders, earning a one on one with the Swansea goalkeeper. Rooney had numerous ways to score, including dribbling the keeper or striking the ball low and hard with his left foot. Rooney elected to take extra touches and time to shift the ball to his right foot, which gave Swansea's Ashley Williams ample time to tackle back and displace the ball from Rooney's feet. The action was the final frustration to United, supporters, player, and manager alike. Even with the inclusion of Marouane Feilani, United failed to break even and Swansea won the match 2-1.

United should be frustrated a consecutive week with a result that they failed to earn and player performances far below their usual measure. Rooney's mercurial form from week to week needs to stabilize. Romero continues to make poor decisions. Memphis continues an unimpressive run in domestic play. As the transfer window advances to a close, United have claimed they will make no panic purchases. However, reports already confirm ingoing and outgoing action. Chicharito appears to be bound for Bayer Leverkusen for a deal worth £12 million. United have also targeted Anthony Martial, a 19 year old striker from AS Monaco in Ligue 1. United may have also made another bid for Welsh winger, Gareth Bale, for £72.9 million. It also appears that the David De Gea saga is approaching a close with Keylor Navas possibly entering the deal as a swap. The transfer window in Spain closes on Monday, a day before the close in England. If De Gea doesn't leave before the Spanish window closes, it will be likely he will stay for one last season before leaving on a free transfer at the end of the year.

European leagues are on a hiatus for international break for European Cup 2016 qualifiers. United return to play on September 12th against rival Liverpool at Old Trafford. The game starts a stretch of numerous and tightly packed matches, as they begin Champions League play against PSV on September 15th. The match against Liverpool will be aired Saturday, 9/12 at 12:30pm on NBCSN.

Watch Tyga’s ‘Stimulated’ Video Featuring Kylie Jenner

After stepping out to the VMAs last night, Tyga liberates a video for “Stimulated” and it co-stars his girlfriend Kylie Jenner. They kept their relationship officially under wraps while Kylie was a minor, but now that she’s turned 18 it seems the couple has nothing to hide.

In the clip, T-Raww prowls around a cliff-side mansion, rapping off a piece of paper. Kylie enters, and the two of them share an intimate moment on a balcony. The song’s lyrics offer what many believe to be a crude reference to Jenner.

“They say she’s young, I should’ve waited / She a big girl, dog, when she stimulated,” he raps.

The song comes off Tyga’s recent mixtape Fuk What They Talkin Bout.

North Carolina Ball Team Threw Retirement Party For Its Bat Dog

The best thing about a retirement party for a dog is that it's a retirement party ... FOR A DOG.

Ahead of her final game on Sept. 2, the Greensboro Grasshopper team of North Carolina honored its bat dog, Miss Babe Ruth, over the weekend with a fête fitting for a lady who's served nearly 10 years with the team, according to local affiliate WFMY.

She showed up to the park in style, in a flashy red car and frilly orange tuxedo. Looking good, girl!

When she ends her career this week, the 9-year-old black Labrador retriever will have appeared in 649 consecutive games for the Class-A affiliate team for the Florida Marlins, the outlet said. She began as just a 9-month-old pup with the Grasshoppers, retrieving bats and bringing baseballs to the home plate umpire.

As with other baseball teams, the service of bat dogs will stay within the family in Greensboro. Cut4 reported that Babe's brother, Master Yogi Berra, and her niece, Miss Lou Lou Gehrig will take over duties of retrieving bats and delivering baseballs in buckets.

Babe's own bucket, however, is earning its place in history, the team announced. It will be donated to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Fans who attended the party also received a Miss Babe Ruth coaster.

Enjoy the retired life, Miss Babe! And if you need more bat dogs (of course you do), ESPN recently profiled the long lineage of bat dogs at the Trenton Thunder.

All the dogs! All the baseball!
